Aluminum Patio Cover Maintenance: What You Actually Need to Do

Jan 12, 2026 · 4 min read

A short, honest guide to keeping an aluminum patio cover looking new for decades.

The whole list

If you came here looking for a long maintenance routine, good news. There is not one.

Once or twice a year: rinse it

Hose down the top of the cover and the gutters. In our climate, dust and pollen build up faster than you would think. Five minutes with a hose handles it.

After heavy storms: clear the gutters

If your cover has integrated gutters, peek in them after the first big storm of the season. Leaves and debris are the only thing that can cause water to overflow.

Check fasteners every few years

Walk the perimeter and look at the screws and brackets where the cover meets the house. If anything looks loose, call us and we will tighten it up. This is rare, but worth a glance.

Touch-up paint

If a piece gets scratched during landscaping or by a careless ladder, color-matched touch-up is available. A small bottle solves it.

What you do not need to do

  • Stain it
  • Seal it
  • Replace rotten beams
  • Treat for termites
  • Repaint every five years

That is the whole pitch for aluminum. The maintenance you save over twenty years more than pays for the upgrade.
