Solid vs Lattice vs Insulated: Which Patio Cover Is Right for You?
Mar 18, 2026 · 7 min read
A practical comparison of solid, lattice, and insulated aluminum patio covers, including shade, rain, cost, and best-fit yards.
The three styles, explained
Aluminum patio covers come in three core styles. Each one solves a different problem.
Solid covers
A solid cover is a flat aluminum roof with the same shape and pitch as a low-slope roof. It blocks all sun and all rain. Pick this if you want a true outdoor room you can use in any weather, run a ceiling fan from, or shade west-facing windows.
Lattice covers
A lattice cover is open beams running across the top of the structure, spaced for the look you want. Light filters through. Rain comes through too. Pick lattice if you want a defined patio area that still feels open, or if you want vines, string lights, and dappled shade.
Insulated panel covers
Insulated panels are solid covers with a foam core between two aluminum skins. They reduce heat transfer, soften rain noise, and span longer distances with fewer posts. Pick this if you want a cooler patio under the cover, plan to install recessed lighting, or want the cleanest finished ceiling.
Quick comparison
| Need | Solid | Lattice | Insulated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full shade | Yes | Partial | Yes |
| Rain protection | Yes | No | Yes |
| Filtered light | No | Yes | No |
| Cooler under-cover temps | Better | Best airflow | Best |
| Recessed lighting | Possible | No | Easy |
| Long spans without posts | Limited | Good | Best |
How to choose
Start with how you want to use the space. If you are planning outdoor dining and a TV, go solid or insulated. If you have a pool deck and want it to feel open, lattice is hard to beat. If you have a tight budget, basic solid panels usually come in lowest. If you want the highest-end finished look with cool temperatures and clean lighting, insulated is worth the upgrade.
You do not have to pick one. Combination designs let us run insulated over the dining table and lattice over the garden in the same structure.
